This week, we are exploring the chemical properties of different rocks and chemical weathering. We discovered that the mineral calcite, is effervescent when your put it in an acid, such as vinegar. Therefor, we tested four rocks samples to see which contained the mineral calcite. We tested limestone, sandstone, marble and basalt. We discovered the both marble and limestone contain the mineral calcite. This reinforces our learning that rocks are composed of minerals, and that rocks and minerals have unique properties that help us determine what type they are and what their use is. This was also a great review of using a graduated cylinder and measuring in mL.
