Growing in Our Learning

Curriculum Corner

Fourth Grade is well underway in their journey into learning. Parents, please take the time to ask your child what learning has taken place in their different classes.

Use the following tips to help guide your discussions with your child (taken from Making Thinking Visible: 10 Apps for Parents - Ron Ritchhart, 2012):
  • Develop a growth mindset... Based on research conducted by Carol Dweck, intelligence and ability grow and develop over time; therefore, develop a growth mindset in your child by focusing your praise on process, learning and effort - "You have really worked on this and you have learned a lot."
  • What makes you say that?... By simply asking this question, you will get a window into your child's thinking about his/her initial response, developing further your child's ability to reason and justify his/her answers

Literacy
Lucy Calkins is the author of our units of study in writing. This week we will focus on the art of elaboration. Students will identify the heart of their story and use strategies for bringing the heart to life! For more details, take a look at her website: Reading and Writing Project.

Math
This week in math, students will review and deepen their understanding of place value by working with numbers up to the millions place. Students will also analyze data to find landmarks such as, maximum, minimum, range, and mode.

Units of Study
We are continuing to study the 5 themes of geography through the lens of Brazil. Students will begin looking for these 5 themes of geography in their chosen region.
