Fourth Grade continues to be active participants in their learning! Parents, please take the time to ask your child meaningful questions about what he/she has been learning in the different subject areas.
Use the following tip to help guide your discussions with your child (taken from Making Thinking Visible: 10 Apps for Parents - Ron Ritchhart, 2012):
- What questions did you ask today?... Questions drive us as learners. Ask your child what questions he/she asked in the different subject areas. Being curious (Graded Core Values) in our learning helps us dig deeper into our understanding and fosters a love for inquiry.

Literacy
Our reading assessment is on Tuesday, September 22nd! Throughout our Patricia Polacco author study, students have been learning about the story elements that bring a story to life.
Parents, ask your child to teach you about the following story elements in preparation for the assessment:

- Somebody and Where (characters and setting)
- Wants/Motivations (problem)
- But/Struggles (events related to the problem)
- So (action that took place to make a decision)
- Then (solution to the problem - the theme of the story, what was the lesson learned for the character and for the reader?)
- Elaboration and Craft (the author's writing style and word choice - how does Patricia Polacco use words to bring the story to life?)
Math
We have now begun Unit 3 in math: Multiplication and Division; Number Sentences and Algebra. One of our goals in the coming weeks is to be fluent in our multiplication facts for single digit numbers. Parents, be sure to read the Family Letter that was sent home with your child. Use it as a resource to help guide your child through Unit 3. Not only does the letter provide you with background information, it also includes important vocabulary and activities you can practice with your child at home.

This is our last week to collect information for students' final Google slide project on his/her region of Brazil. Parents, you can help your child in this process by encouraging your child to use the following reading strategies as he/she researches...

Agora que todos concluíram as pesquisas sobre os diversos lugares visitados em suas viagens, chegou a hora de escrever textos informativos reunindo tudo o que aprenderam. Sendo assim, em nossa oficina de escrita, vamos nos dedicar ao estudo das características do texto informativo e como estruturar esse tipo de texto - definir o título, os subtítulos, incluir fotos e outros recursos que ajudarão o leitor na compreensão das informações que cada texto irá apresentar. Em nossa Roda de Leitura, na sexta-feira, continuaremos conhecendo a diversidade cultural da Índia com o livro O hambúrguer era de carneiro.

This week, in Dona Dani’s class, students will continue to work on their research, in Viagens Pelo Mundo project. In class, we have been reading the book Grandes Cidades, to inspire students. Every Friday, students take a book in Portuguese to be read at home, and they are supposed to read it at least 4 or 5 times, on different days.
After having finished the research step, students’ in Dona Nati’s class are going to the next step in their Viagens Pelo Mundo project: putting all gathered information in one piece of informational writing. This is an important step in which students will work with their writing partners to revise and edit their texts and to transform it into an oral presentation speeches.

Students will continue the shared reading of O Hambúrguer era de Carneiro , which is our informational and personal narrative text source.During the next two weeks, students are supposed to dedicate daily independent reading time at home to read the books they have chosen from our class library.
