Fourth Grade has PASSION!

Curriculum Corner

Hey Fourth Grade! What are you passionate about? This week we launched our exciting passion program, Maracujá! After meeting as a whole grade level to talk about passion, I wonder, in what ways does passion drive our learning?

We watched inspirational videos, brainstormed and discussed our dreams and passions, and even heard from an inspirational 7th grader who motivated us to follow our hearts and never give up. We are so excited to start this journey and to see where Maracujá takes us.

Let's open our minds to new experiences and make meaningful connections to the learning that is taking place about our passions. When you embrace a growth mindset, you can learn anything!

Parents, find out more about your child's possible passions. Ask your child, “What are you passionate about? What do you want to learn more about? How can your passion influence others?” Perhaps their ideas can inspire you!

Literacy
Next week we are hosting Graded’s first literacy lab site. Ms. Kristina Seeley is visiting us from New York to coach teachers in the Writer’s Workshop. She will also be working with students on goal setting in Information Writing. Students are working on leads, text structures and transition words to effectively teach readers about Trade and Economy. Take the time to review the following presentations about text features and text structures.

Math

We started a new unit on division in math, Unit 6: Division; Map Reference Frames; Measures of Angles. We will be looking at different methods to solve division problems, identifying and measuring angles, and continued practice with multiplication facts. It is important that students continue to maintain and build on their understanding of multiplication and division facts to continue their mathematics progression. Here is a link to a Khan Academy video that highlights some basic division methods. Also, take a look at the following music videos to help learn the steps to long division. Students, continue to sharpen your skills by practicing your math facts and by playing the following math games.

Units of Study

Students are continuing to learn exciting new concepts related to trade and economy, specifically through the lens of Brazil. Students are diving into research, note taking, and writing their own informative text over the following concepts.

• How our basic needs and wants are met through manufactured goods and services

• How supply and demand affect prices
• Why we trade (import & export)
• Natural resources and products that Brazil exports
• Resources and products that Brazil needs and imports
• The benefits and costs of trade (the effects of trade on Brazil's economy)
