Monte Serrat - The View of Santos

• Imigrantes and Anchieta highways facilitate transport of good
• You can see the old and new parts of the city
• Pirates threatened the ships and the community, even during present day
• The church provided a view of the port - this was a vantage point for security, not only to see if pirates were attacking, but also for the community to take refuge
• The city of Santos started because of the port and its expansion over time
• The port grew mainly because of the coffee trade

The Port of Santos

• Different countries have their ships docked in the port
• Cargo ships export all kinds of goods and resources all around the world, for example, coffee, sugar, chemicals, minerals, flour, orange juice, soya, wheat from Argentina, electronics, merchandise, cars and gasoline
• Import fertilizers 
• Tug boats help pull ships along the canals
• Orange juice reservoirs are located in the port 
• Favelas are also located in the port
• Mangroves have been cut down - the trees provide nutrients for the fish in the water
• There is room for about 300 ships to enter the port
• Large warehouses store goods for transport 
• Cranes are powered on electric energy and oil
• Ferry boats transport people to and from Santos and Guarujá
• Beaches of Guarujá attract tourism

• 1895 - Coffee is the major industry of trade in Brazil
• The Process of Making Coffee:
1. Coffee farms grow coffee
2. Mature coffee beans are picked and brought to the factory for production
3. The beans are selected and packaged for distribution
4. Packaged coffee is loaded onto trucks and ships for distribution around Brazil and to other countries
5. Coffee is sold to consumers
• There economical growth of Santos is due to the growing coffee trade in Brazil
• The coffee trade brought immigrants to work on the coffee farms
