Grade 5s started a new unit last week called Argument & Advocacy. This unit has two summative assessments: an argument writing essay and a final debate. Our grade 5s already love learning the art of debate, and we are looking forward to seeing their progress throughout the unit.
Enduring Understandings:
- Being able to read, analyze, and evaluate informational texts can lead to a greater, more accurate understanding of a complex topic.
- Writers develop and present arguments and support their claims using evidence and explanation drawn from reliable sources.
Essential Questions:
- What makes an argument effective?
- How can arguments affect change? What role can we personally play in using arguments to affect change?
- How do writers of informational texts use examples and evidence effectively to convince a reader of their claim?
- How can I evaluate claims made in informational texts and reconcile competing claims from multiple sources?
