Some students are continuing in their Fantasy series and others are having a go at a different series. It is an exciting time to be in Grade 5 where students are applying the strategies and reading skills they have been working on all year in an independent setting.
As they work on their Novel Notebook, they are analyzing and digging deeper into their Fantasy book. They have two weeks to start and finish a book, and although most students could read two books a week at this point, we are interested in the thinking and reflecting that happens while reading.
The Novel Notebook is meant to encourage students to "dig deeper" and think while they read. Right now, students have divided their book into thirds to find vocabulary, they are choosing questions that reflect on the plot structure to answer during reading and they will have small bell ringers that get them analyzing the genre and author's craft of their book. All of these thinking routines and reading will happen in the classroom.
Some students are finishing their book and starting a new one tomorrow. Here is what students did today and need organized by Thursday to be ready to be successful in organizing their time:
When answering questions about the plot structure (Expository, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution), students should continue to use sentence stems to structure their answers. We have been using these to elevate our thinking and help our ideas come across more eloquent.
