Reading Responses... Digging Deeper into What We Read

Make Meaningful Connections to What You Read!

Hey Grade 4!

Take a look at the following the reading responses. I wonder, in what ways has each student made his/her thinking visible and clear?

Compare what you wrote in your reading response to the ones provided below. Ask yourself the following question: "In what ways could I dig deeper into my understanding of what I read?"

Think critically about the reading response question you choose to answer for next week. I wonder, in what ways could you make your thinking more visible and clear? 

Practice using the following reading strategies to help deepen your understanding of the text you are reading. I wonder, what other strategies are you using when you read? Share your reading strategies in the comment box below!

  • Preview
    • Look at the cover and title
    • Look at some of the pictures and read some of the text
  • Question
    • Ask who, what, when, where, why and how
    • Decide if what you've read makes sense
  • Predict
    • Wonder about what will happen next
    • Make guesses and read ahead to see if your predictions are correct
  • Infer
    • Imagine the details
    • Use what you've read to understand what the author means
  • Connect
    • Relate what you've read to what you know, as well as, to your thoughts and feelings
  • Summarize
    • Organize and connect the details
    • Draw your own conclusions
  • Evaluate
    • Think about what you've read
    • What did you learn?
    • Was it important to you? What makes you say that?
    • Did you like it? What makes you say that?
