Putting our Learning into Action!

Curriculum Corner

Fourth Grade is putting their learning into action! Parents, please take the time to ask your child to describe how he/she has been applying what has been learned in the different subject areas.

Use the following tip to help guide your discussions with your child (taken from Making Thinking Visible: 10 Apps for Parents - Ron Ritchhart, 2012):

• Challenge but don't rescue... When your child is having difficulties in his/her learning, ask questions that will help him/her think through the problem. Help your child to identify and then select the appropriate action for moving forward.

Literacy

Our reading assessment is fast approaching - Tuesday, September 22nd! Throughout our Patricia Polacco author study, students have been learning about the story elements that bring a story to life. 

Parents, ask your child to teach you about the following story elements in preparation for the assessment:

• Somebody and Where (characters and setting)
• Wants/Motivations (problem)
• But/Struggles (events related to the problem)
• So (action that took place to make a decision)
• Then (solution to the problem - the theme of the story, what was the lesson learned for the character and for the reader?)
• Elaboration and Craft (the author's writing style and word choice - how does Patricia Polacco use words to bring the story to life?)

Math

We are nearing the end of Unit 2 in math which covered concepts such as place value up to the millions, multi-digit addition and subtraction, and data analysis and interpretation using maximum, minimum, median, mode, and range. Students will take the Unit 2 post-test on Tuesday, September 15th. Please be sure your child is working on his/her Unit 2 study guide!

Units of Study

We are developing our understandings of our chosen regions of Brazil and will be diving into the research aspect of our project. Students will begin to collect information for their final Google slide project on their region, both in class and at home.

Nessa semana iniciaremos nossas pesquisas sobre os diversos lugares visitados pelos alunos em suas viagens. A pesquisa é uma etapa muito importante de nosso projeto e, por isso, vamos dedicar tempo em classe para leitura e seleção de informações sobre cada local. Em nossa Roda de Leitura, daremos continuidade a leitura do livro O hambúrguer era de carneiro, de Daniela Chindler. O livro, uma narrativa cheia de aventura e descobertas, conta a viagem de duas meninas para a Índia, um país de contrastes incríveis.

PAL

Students have started their Viagens Pelo Mundo projects, in which they will learn the best online research practices to gather new information about one of the places they have been to. As a final product, students will deliver an oral presentation with Google Presentation slides, which will happen in early October, after having written down a text with all this new information. Be ready to take part in this process, if your child comes home and wants to get information from his/her parents. Thank you for your support!
