The fifth graders are working very hard on their science project. Students work as scientists, by using the scientific inquiry process, to develop a simple solution to the worldwide issue of accessing to clean water.
Their final product is a lab report that answers the following questions:
Each child was given the opportunity to research different texts and videos to explore new and innovative ways to solve this problem. In addition, they were encouraged to improve any solutions that have already been invented. They are doing a wonderful job!

- What are the factors that impact access to clean water?
- What actions can we take to improve access to clean water?
Each child was given the opportunity to research different texts and videos to explore new and innovative ways to solve this problem. In addition, they were encouraged to improve any solutions that have already been invented. They are doing a wonderful job!
Many students have enthusiastically prepared and are testing their results in class. Please note that observations and results are a required part of their lab report. However, we do realize that many ideas require observations that can not be tested; such as wells and pipes. For these solutions we ask that students draw and label pictures. They can be added to their lab report in the observation section. A written narrative will need to be included that explains their predictions based on their research.
While all the building and tinkering is done during class time, we are asking students to bring from home some specific materials they want to use and we cannot provide. We are encouraging students to reuse and recycle material such as plastic bottles or paper cups. Fifth graders are really encaged with their inventions, but please remind your child that the main outcome of the project is the lab report. We even discussed in class how some of their ideas could become life careers, but right now, we need to focus on what we can create on about a week.

The lab report is due on Thursday, October 13th. On the this day your child will present their lab report to the class. They may bring in their experiment to model and explain their process. The lab report and rubric students are currently using in are attached for your reference. Please take some time and go over the Investigation Plan with your child.
