Probability@ Sanchez and Kitto's class


What are the chances you get a 6? Find out asking a grade 5 student since they are review the ins and outs of probability! and chips to understand how to determine the number of possible outcomes in a random event. 



They are also using grids to figure out probabilities in more complex situations. Probabilities aren’t just for predicting dice rolls - the principles students are learning are the basis for predictions in all kinds of complex systems, from the stock market to the weather.

You’ll learn all about what probability means, why we study it, and how to express a probability on paper. After watching a short video, students are using dice, coins, spinner

Transformations, Congruence, and Similarity @Sanchez and Kitto´s classes







What are geometric transformations? And how do they relate to real life? Student are learning and reviewing symmetry and transformation by translating, rotating, and reflecting different 2D shapes. They are learning about the three basic types of transformation, and where you can see them at work in the world around us. 


They defined all the new terms in their red or yellow journal using their own words.

Grade 5 students are working on pages 411 and 320 on their math journals as a study guide for their last math assessment this Thursday. Make sure you write down all possible questions and doubts so we can solve them tomorrow during class time.

Volume Challenge @Sanchez and Kitto´s class

Experience life in 3-D! 
Students are leaning what a prism is, what shape the sides are, and how prisms are named. They are finding out about several types of prisms that they’re probably already familiar with, and explore the formula for the volume of a prism and a cylinder after working through a few sample hands-on problems with various types of prisms. 



To show their understanding of volume, Grade 5 students in Ms Sanchez and Kitto´s class are participating in the Geometry Challenge.

The Candy Store Project @Sanchez and Kitto - Applying Scales to our Math Assessment

Students worked on converting unit of measure (mj 366A and 366B) to extend their learning of scales. Then they applied their understanding to their next Math Assessment, the 2D blueprint that is due Friday.

To review and practice their learning about area and perimeter, students were requested to finish their Khan Academy Area Challenge.

The Candy Store Project @Sanchez and Kitto - Scales

Like to draw in a big way? Designing your store?
Grade 5 students can show you how to resize images and use scale drawing to make pictures larger and smaller! Today they worked through a sample problem to help them figure out how to use ratios to find the scale of an original image and that of the final product. They also learned what can happen if the height and width scales are different. Lastly, they discovered how using a grid can help them keep things nice and neat. 

Now it is time for them to apply all their learning about scales, ratios, area and perimeter to our next step on the Candy Store Project: the blue print. Please use the rubric to guide your first draft.

LS Grade 5 Math Candy Shop Project Plan 2016 - 2017
2D Drawing:
Make a scale drawing of store on a 8 1/2 x 14 in paper. It will be a one-store shop. Doors needs be 3 feet wide. You will use 1in to 2ft as the scale and draw an aerial view sketch of your shop (like a blueprint). Graph paper can be helpful in the making of the drawings, but your final picture may not be on graph paper. Final blueprint may be on any other paper or a print out from a computer based software (google sketch, homestyler...). This is a 2D drawing. On your scale drawing you must include the scale used (measurement : actual dimension) and the dimensions (perimeter and area) of piece of furniture in the measurement and the actual dimension. Use one color for the measurement and one color for the actual measurement. Do not worry about the height of the store- see scale model directions for that.
Due to Sao Paulo city and state requirements, one of the walls will be made of glass and your store signs will be place on it.
Your store will have, at least, one rectangle table for the cashier and one circular table to display your candy. Remember to left room to customers to walk around, cashier, doors, window. The perimeter of the cashier table won't be more than 9 ¾  ft.
Requirements:

Get ready for the SUPER CHALLENGE @Sanchez and Kitto's classes

Grade 5 students from Ms Sanchez and Ms Kitto's classes are getting ready for the SUPER CHALLENGE that is happening tomorrow during Math class.





Students are 

  • reviewing the work they did on their math journals last week (295, 299, 309,310, 307, 311-314)
  • finish todays's checking for understanding on pages 361,364,365,366, and 
  • working on their Khan Academy individual recommendations.

The Candy Store Project @Sanchez and Kitto - Geometry

Ever feel like measuring space? 
Your child can teach you the basics of geometry, the branch of math that’ll help you do just that! We have started out by learning about Euclid, the ancient Greek mathematician whose ideas are still taught in math classes today. Next, we reviewed the difference between a point and a line, what two-dimensional figures are, and what it means for an object to have length, width, and depth. 
Finally, students reviewed some of the basic physical tools we can use to measure things like angles.

To explore Geometry, our class worked on the following MJ pages: 307,311 313,314 and watched a Brainpop video.


Students can also play Pyramid Panic or Sortifyand watch this sort video.

The Candy Store Project @Sanchez and Kitto - Ratio

Dare to compare! 

Today students were introduced to one particularly useful means of comparison: ratios. They learned exactly what a ratio is and how division is used in writing one. They reviewed out the difference between a part and a whole, as well as how to know when a ratio is involved in a math problem or in real life!

The Candy Store Project @Sanchez and Kitto - Area

What are polygons anyway, and how can you find their areas? Ask your grade 5 to show you how to find the area of polygons, like triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms. First, you’ll learn how to find the area of squares and rectangles. Then, you’ll discover a new twist to finding the area of other parallelograms and their altitudes. Your child will also walk you through some great examples of area problems and help you discover all of the formulas that make finding the area of different shapes easy. 

Who knew you could learn geometry without getting a headache?

The Candy Store Project @Sanchez and Kitto - Fraction Review

Today students in Ms Sanchez and Ms Kitto explored fractions conceptually and add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.

The Candy Store Project @Sanchez and Kitto - The Coordinate Grid



It's every kid's dream to own a candy store! 
Grade 5 launched today the Candy Store Project that covers the last math unit.

Grade 5 students are now choosing a theme and  name for their candy store. After that, they get to choose what candy to put in it! They will add candy displays to their store using the dimensions and requirements given. 

During this sweet project, kids will practice graphing points on a coordinate plane, fractions, decimal operations and develop geometry skills.

Today we started working plotting numbers on the coordinate grid and understanding how it works.

LS Grade 5 Math Candy Shop Sign Rubric
Directions for the sign of the Candy Shop. This is an individual part of the project and students will have plenty of time to work on it during class time, however they could need extra time at home to finish it. Please, use the assignments planner to manage your time wisely.
Store sign:
Whether it's jelly beans, chocolate or bubblegum, people young and old, in large metropolitan cities and small rural areas enjoy eating candy. Candy stores are a business that can be run in many ways, and it is a feasible venture to start for both new and experienced entrepreneurs. Running a candy store can be exciting and profitable, but to be successful, you must carefully plan the launch and growth of your business.

Once you have selected a theme for your candy store business with your team, (for instance, you can specialize in selling organic candy, gourmet chocolates, homemade confections, or old-fashioned and nostalgic candies.), you are going to design the store sign. Each candy store will have as many signs as team members. Have in mind that good retail signage tells customers what or why they are looking at a selection of merchandise. A great store sign has to capture the customer’s interest enough to read it; just like a great email subject line gets someone to open it, a great headline in a newspaper gets someone to read it or a great magazine cover makes someone buy it.

Here is your rubric to create a compelling retail signage
  1. Be short and to the point. Customers are in hurry; respect that.

  1. Make sure the fonts you use are easy to read. Clear font characters - without curly-cues and multiple colors - let the customer’s attention first gravitate to your message and then to your product. If customers can’t quickly read it (see above), they’ll move on.

  1. State the customers’ reasons for buying your product or service. What is the customer buying this for? To be a hero to his son? To look fabulous for a date? To have easy-to-manage hair? Then tell them, “Be a hero tonight with this.” “Make heads turn!” “Manage curly hair with this.”

  1. Less is still more.A recent article in the Wall Street Journal said people were shortening text messages down to a of couple words, a couple of initials, or a single emoticon. We are all getting used to short, succinct messages.

  1. Test your sign. Ask a friend to tell you what your sign is about. If they can’t get it - edit, edit,edit.

  1. Have fun. Boring signs are, well, boring. Remember, your goal is to grab a casual buyer's attention. Use color.

  1. Your sign should be presented as a triangle on a 8 1/2 x 14 plotted in graphing paper - provided at school - showing the ordered pairs

  1. The area of the triangle must be at least 13 square in and no more than 130 square cm.
