Math Homework or Work on Math at Home?

To build math stamina and independence all students should be working 30 minutes on Math everyday. To support that Grade 5 expectation, students have a unit checklist where they can find all the learning goals of the unit and recommended weekly home assignments. They weekly assignments are both Study Links and their individualised Khan Academy goals. This means that your child should be bringing home their study packet each day (and back to school). However, the pace and due date vary for each unit.

Fifth graders have also a digital version of the checklist saved in their google drive. In case they cannot find them, they know the checklist is now available here, in the class blog. They know how to make a copy to their own personal drive.

Another online resources offered to students is Mathletics. The individualized information provided from both Khan Academy and Mathletics on students growth is very powerful. In addition, we have given the students access to several links that support their growth in the unit we are covering and provides practices while engaged in video gaming activities.

Students also use their Math Journals daily. Math Journals are kept at school. This is the book that your child uses for classwork. We also use it to assess their understanding of several different standards. Any time students have a question or doubt at home, we recommend they check the online version of their Math Reference Book. Students keep the user name and password for all Everyday Math online resources in their agendas.

Please remember that EveryDay Math is based on a spiralling curriculum. This means that there will be  questions that are asked during the unit that we are covering that have not necessarily been taught  during the unit. They might have been covered earlier in the year, even in younger  grades, or they will be taught in the near future. The purpose of this is to build on these skills, collect class data to better support your child and build stamina in all of the key mathematical domains.

A few fifth graders are participating in a Fermi Competition. Fermi Math is a program that is designed to challenge students through the use of collaboration, creativity, communication and problem solving skills. Students were chosen based on their problem solving and teamwork competencies. This program requires a high level of independence, and a strong sense of collaboration.  We understand there are other students that would like to be challenged, this differentiation happens daily inside of the classroom.

We are both offering additional math support on Tuesday after school in our classroom from 3-4.
