Coffee Farm Field Trip!

Third graders had a blast on their field trip to Fazenda Santo Antonio da Bela Vista outside of Itu. Students arrived and had a tasty breakfast of passionfruit juice, grape juice, and hot chocolate accompanied by meat and cheese sandwiches and a few bolhina de chuva. First we, learned about
how the coffee beans were harvested from the plants and had the chance to authentically sift a pile of beans from debris of leaves and sticks. Next, we learned how the beans were sorted and dried in the sun. In the big barn we saw the large machines that were used to finish the drying process and peel the skin off the
coffee bean fruit and one last quality sort. Finally, we saw how the coffee beans were stored and roasted. Before lunch we went for a 4.4 km hike on the trail around the coffee farm. For many students this was the first time they had this kind of experience. Crossing over a stream on a log bridge, ducking under twisted branches, avoiding ant hills, observing nature, spotting: old bee hives, forest mushrooms, fallen shells of bird eggs, twisted branches of trees ready to climb other trees nearby.  As we made our way back to the farm, students had to avoid cow droppings and jump across a good sized puddle that was in our path. Bebel, the farm's owner received us with a tasty lunch of rice & beans, spagetti with meatballs, chicken, salad, and jello.  As we finished lunch and bought our coffee we made our way onto the buses and back to school.  Thank you parents for getting your children to school early so this trip could be possible.

MATH NEWS!

  

Unit 9 is one of the three units in Everyday Math that focuses on the important skills of multiplication and division. In this unit, we will focus on a partial-products algorithm for multiplying 1- and 2-digit numbers, as well as develop readiness skills for division. In addition, students will review important concepts such as remainders in division and positive and negative numbers. So, the main areas of focus are:

• to multiply and divide with multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000.
• to use mental math to multiply,
• to share money, and
• to find products of 2-digit numbers. 

We ask that you help your child practice his/her multiplication facts at home and thank you for the support in this matter! The sooner the students learn their facts, the quicker and more confident in Math they become. Thank you!

Saying Farewell to Friends

Putting the Good in Goodbye

On Wednesday, April 8 ,at 8:30, the PTA welcomes all parents to a special Coffee focused on how to deal with saying goodbye to friends who will be transitioning from Graded this year.  Intercultural specialist, Elisabeth Weingraber-Pircher, will share with parents important tips on how to support your child in this difficult process.  The workshop will be particularly relevant to both families who are departing this year, and to families who will be facing the departure of close friends.  As an international and Brazilian community we are constantly facing change and transition.  Elisabeth will give us important tools to learn from these changes in our lives and support our children in the process. MATH NEWS!

We are excited to have begun Unit 7 which extends the basic multiplication and division skills the students learned in the first semester. The skills developed in this unit are useful and important requisites for the use of estimation and calculators and for the development of algorithms. The four areas of focus at this point are:

• To review basic multiplication and division patterns,
• To extend basic multiplication facts (if 7 x 8 = 56, what is 70 x 800?),
• To practice estimating costs, and
• To explore ratios and geometric figures.

We ask that you take time to practice the basic math facts with your child. The students can also practice using Mathletics or Everyday Math online. Thank you for your support!

2015 Welcomes Math!

We are so happy to be back in class working on Math! In December, we began our unit on place value of whole numbers and decimals. We are now extending those previous lessons on the base-ten place value system of whole numbers to decimals through thousandths. Students are reading, writing, comparing, and ordering these numbers. Through hands-on activities we are providing opportunities for the students to use large whole numbers and decimals in real-life contexts. How can you help at home? A couple of ideas: 

• Write decimals for your child to read aloud, such as 0.32 (thirty-two hundredths) or 0.9 (nine-tenths).
• Write down two 4, 5, or 6 digit numbers. Ask your child to tell which is larger and explain why. Try a few more and switch roles!
• Have fun reviewing these skills with your child!

Self-esteem is how we value ourselves and how valuable we think we are to others.  Self-esteem affects nearly every part of our lives, including our trust in others, our relationships, and our performance in various areas.  

                           

A healthy self- esteem is important for many reasons.  If we have a healthy self-

esteem:

• We are more likely to take positive risks and avoid taking negative risks.   
• We are less likely to give into peer pressure and more likely to stick up for what we believe.  
• We are able to recognize and feel proud of our accomplishments.  
• We are persistent even when things are difficult.  
• We have the strength to deal with challenges.  
• We demonstrate the flexibility to deal with changes in life.  
• We set higher goals for him/herself and strive to reach them.

The following are recommendations to build and/or maintain a healthy self-esteem.  

• Surround yourself with people that are kind, recognize your positive qualities, and help you to succeed.  
• Be kind, polite, and recognize others’ talents and positive qualities.  
• Set difficult but realistic goals and create a plan to meet them.  
• Use positive self-talk.  
• Talk about your feelings openly with trusted individuals when faced with challenges and difficulties.

Special Event!! Portugues and English Book Event

Hello Parents!
This is a bit last minute, but here is a super cool invite to an activity next week! (See below!) Also, please do not forget that next Friday, December 5, is our grade 3 holiday concert, beginning in the auditorium at 9am. Children are invited to wear their holiday best!

 Dear Parents, 
 The Lower School Library together with the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) will be hosting a read aloud event on Monday, December 1st, at 3:15 p.m. for 2nd and 3rd grade students. The students will listen to one story in English followed by a story in Portuguese. Kids will have some time to discuss the stories, stroll along the LS library and socialize in the new reading area. All students must be accompanied by a family member. Please arrange directly with the classroom teachers if your child will be staying after school. Hope to see you all there,

You are warmly invited to attend Graded's Lower School Holiday Choir Concert.  The concert will be next week, Friday, December 5th, 2014 in the auditorium.
